Why windsock maintenance matters
A windsock is a safety-critical visual aid. On a licensed aerodrome it tells pilots wind direction and approximate speed during the most demanding moments of any flight. On a COMAH site it points crews to safe muster points during a gas release. On a lifting operation it warns the appointed person when wind loads on a suspended load are approaching limits.
When the fabric fades, tears or waterlogs, the signal degrades. A faded orange sleeve reads as pink or white against a bright sky. A partially collapsed sock under-reports wind speed. A seized swivel gives false direction. Each failure mode is preventable through structured inspection and a documented replacement cycle.
This guide sets out how to inspect, clean and replace windsocks in line with CAA CAP 168 (Licensing of Aerodromes), ICAO Annex 14 (Aerodromes, Volume I), FAA AC 150/5345-27F (Specification for Wind Cone Assemblies) and EASA EU Regulation 139/2014. The regulatory basis for a maintenance regime
CAA CAP 168 requires that aerodrome visual aids be maintained to a standard that ensures they remain fit for purpose. ICAO Annex 14 sets colour and visibility requirements. FAA AC 150/5345-27F specifies construction and performance for wind cone assemblies at US facilities. None of these documents publishes a fixed replacement date. All of them place the duty on the operator to inspect, record and act.
That is the point most maintenance programmes miss. Compliance is not achieved by buying a compliant windsock. It is achieved by documenting that the windsock has remained compliant in service. Your inspection log is the audit evidence.

Set your inspection frequency against risk, not habit. A busy licensed aerodrome, a helipad above a hospital, and a fuel storage terminal all warrant more frequent checks than a quiet private strip.

Daily visual check
The daily check is a walk-past, not a climb-up. Look for:
- Fabric present, correctly attached and free to rotate
- Colour still recognisably international orange
- No obvious tears, holes or bird damage
- Sock filling correctly in prevailing wind
- Illumination working where fitted (for night-use installations)
Record the check with initials and time. A tick-box sheet at the ops desk is enough.
Monthly detailed inspection
The monthly inspection is hands-on. Lower the sock or access the mast safely under a documented working-at-height procedure, in line with LOLER 1998 (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and BS 7121 (Code of practice for safe use of cranes) where mobile access equipment is used, or BS EN 1808 (Suspended access equipment) and BS EN 12159 (Builders hoists) where relevant.
Check for:
- UV fade against a reference colour swatch or a new sock
- Stitching integrity, especially at the throat and trailing edge
- Fraying at the outlet
- Retaining spring or lacing cord condition
- Swivel bearing rotation, corrosion and grease condition
- Mast plumb, fixings tight, earthing intact
- Lamp function, lens clarity and cable insulation if lit
Photograph anything that looks marginal. Photographs beat memory when you review trends over 12 months.
Cleaning windsocks safely
Most industrial fabric windsocks do not need routine washing. Rain and wind self-clean the sleeve. Cleaning becomes relevant where the sock has picked up hydrocarbons, salt deposits, bird waste or fire-fighting foam residues.
Cleaning method
- Remove the sock from the swivel. Do not attempt to clean it in situ.
- Lay it flat on a clean surface. Inspect before you wet it.
- Rinse with cold or lukewarm water. Do not use hot water. Heat sets stains and can affect UV-treated coatings.
- If detergent is needed, use a mild pH-neutral soap. Never use bleach, solvents or petroleum-based cleaners. These strip UV inhibitors and accelerate colour loss.
- Rinse thoroughly. Detergent residues attract dirt.
- Air dry fully before refitting. A damp sock stored on the swivel will mildew and rot at the throat.
If a sock needs cleaning more than twice a year, the site environment is telling you something. Consider a heavy duty specification and a shorter replacement cycle rather than repeated washing.
Signs a windsock needs replacing
Replace on evidence, not on the calendar alone. The following triggers should force a replacement regardless of age:
- Colour fade to pink, salmon or white in any panel
- Any tear longer than 50 mm
- Fraying that has reached the stitched hem
- Loss of shape when filled in a steady wind of 15 knots or more
- Waterlogging that persists more than an hour after rain stops
- Damage to the retaining spring, throat wire or lacing eyelets
- Seized or noisy swivel bearing that a service will not restore

Expected service life
Service life depends on exposure, wind loading and UV intensity. As a planning baseline for a quality UK-manufactured aviation-grade sock:

Mast, swivel and pole maintenance
The sleeve gets the attention. The hardware fails the audit. A perfectly serviceable windsock on a seized swivel is non-compliant because it no longer indicates direction reliably.
Annually, or at each sleeve replacement, service the swivel arm. Clean the bearing, re-grease with a marine-grade waterproof grease, check the counterweight where fitted and confirm free rotation through 360 degrees. Replace corroded fasteners with stainless equivalents.

Record keeping and audit evidence

- Sock condition, with photos where relevant
- Hardware condition
- Actions taken
- Next scheduled inspection
Keep records for a minimum of the licensed period of the aerodrome, or seven years for industrial sites, whichever is longer. During a CAA audit or an HSE investigation, this log is the first document requested.
