Airport Windsocks

Falcon supplies airport windsocks manufactured in the United Kingdom to the standards aerodrome operators are assessed against. Every windsock is independently fabric-tested by Intertek (UKAS) and documented against CAA CAP 168, ICAO Annex 14, and FAA AC 150/5345-27F, so the specification is ready for your safety file. What an airport windsock needs to do

A windsock at an aerodrome is a primary wind direction indicator. It has to be visible from the air and the ground, hold a true shape in light and strong wind, and stay serviceable through sustained UV and weather exposure. The relevant standards set out colour, dimensions, and siting so that pilots read wind direction and approximate speed reliably.

Standards for airport windsocks

Falcon Premium windsocks are made to support compliance with the standards that apply to your operation.

  • CAA CAP 168 (United Kingdom). Sets the aerodrome design requirements for licensed UK aerodromes, including wind direction indicators.
  • ICAO Annex 14 (International). The international standard for aerodrome design, used as the reference for civil aviation worldwide.
  • FAA AC 150/5345-27F (United States). The specification for wind cone assemblies at US airports, where the term wind cone is used alongside windsock.

Full detail and downloadable documentation are on the compliance page.

Choosing the right size

Airport windsocks are specified by length. The right size depends on the site and the viewing distance.

  • 7 foot (2.1 m). The standard size for most airfields and aerodromes.
  • 12 foot (3.6 m). For large installations and longer viewing distances.
  • 4 foot (1.2 m). For compact sites and secondary indicators.

See the windsock size guide for the full comparison.
